About BishnupurBishnupur is an important town located in the Bishnupur district of Manipur. It is also the administrative headquarter of the Bishnupur district. Bishnupur is also known as Bishnupur. The name of the town is derived from the age old Vishnu temple located in the town. The town is located 27 km from the state capital Imphal. Bishnupur is referred to as the land of the dancing deer.
History of BishnupurThe original name of Bishnupur was Lumlangdong. The name of the district Bishnupur goes back to the ancient times. The historical facts suggested that King Kyamba maintained very good relations with the Pongs. Kymba wanted to annihilate Kyang, a Shan kingdom. Along with the King of Pong, Kymba attacked Kyang. The two kings after winning the battle divided the area among them. An idol of lord Vishnu was gifted to Kymba by King Pong. The Vishnu idol was kept in Lumlangdong. And since the installation of the Idol, the place came to be known as Bishnupur. The worship of Vishnu began in Manipur during this time. The Vishnu temple was built by Kymba at Bishnupur. The temple is maintained by the ministry of HRD (Archeology) Government of India.
Geography of BishnupurBishnupur district has a total geographical area of 530 sq km. It is situated at longitude 93.76oE and 24.63oN latitude. The important rivers of the Bishnupur district are the Nambol, the Thongjaorok and the Khuga. Bishnupur enjoys moderate climatic condition. Summer in the district is hot and humid and during winter the weather remains much cold. The average rainfall is 1200-1400 mm.

The average literacy rate of Bishnupur is 84.54 %. The official language of Bishnupur is Meiteilon (Manipuri).Manipuri Muslims known as Meitei Pangal, and Tribals are also the inhabitants of the district.
Economy of BishnupurAgriculture is the main mode of living of the people. The main agricultural crops are rice, maize, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane and potato etc. The main horticultural crops are cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, chilly, pumpkin, gourd, pineapple and banana and so on. People are also engaged in fishing activities.
